Pertanyaan tentang Siklus Dosa dan Keselamatan

Pertanyaan:
Setelah mendengar khotbah hari Minggu tgl 9 Agustus 2026 kemarin, ada penjelasan mengenai siklus dosa dan respon anugrah Tuhan yg berulang2 untuk bangsa Israel di kitab hakim2. Mereka sama berdosa keji tapi bangsa lain Tuhan musnahkan, yang ini tidak karena bangsa pilihan. Pertanyaan saya, saat berada dalam siklus dosa, apa bedanya antara orang kristen yang sungguh2 beroleh keselamatan dibanding dg yang tidak di jaman sekarang?

Jawaban:
Beda antara orang Kristen yang sungguh2 beroleh keselamatan dan yang tidak saat sama-sama ada dalam siklus dosa bukan terletak pada soal siapa yang tidak jatuh, atau berapa kali ia jatuh, tetaapi soal pola respons ketika jatuh. Beberapa perbedaannya sebagai berikut:

1. Ada pergumulan batin melawan dosa, bukan kenyamanan di dalamnya. Orang yang beroleh keselamatan tetap bisa terjerat dosa, tapi ada peperangan di dalam dirinya, dosa itu terasa mengganggu, ada pergulatan dalam dirinya, bukan dinormalisasi. (Roma 7:14-25)

2. Penyesalan yang membawa pada pertobatan sejati, bukan sekadar rasa bersalah.
Dalam 2 Korintus 7:10 di sana membedakan antara dukacita ilahi yang menghasilkan pertobatan menuju keselamatan, dengan dukacita duniawi yang hanya menghasilkan penyesalan sesaat tanpa perubahan arah hidup.

3. Orang Kristen yang sungguh2 beroleh keselamatan memiliki kepekaan terhadap Roh Kudus. (conviction – ini adalah pekerjaan Roh Kudus).
Ada Roh Kudus yang bekerja dalam hatinya, bukan hati yang mengeras. Yohanes 16:8 menjelaskan bahwa Roh Kudus menginsafkan dunia akan dosa. Orang percaya meskipun ia jatuh berulang-ulang kali, tapi tetap responsif terhadap teguran itu (teguran dari Roh Kudus), berbeda dengan hati yang makin tumpul (bdk. Ibrani 3:13).

4. Orang Kristen yang sungguh2 beroleh keselamatan melihat disiplin dari Tuhan sebagai tanda kepemilikan, bukan penolakan.
Orang yang sungguh2 beroleh keselamatan ketika jatuh dalam dosa, biasanya ada "rasa tidak enak" yang muncul, hati nurani yang menusuk, gelisah, tidak tenang, atau bahkan lewat teguran orang lain, khotbah, atau kejadian dalam hidup yang seolah menegur kita. Itu tanda Tuhan sedang "mengurus" kita, karena kita anak-Nya. Justru yang perlu dipertanyakan itu kalau seseorang bisa terus-menerus berbuat dosa, bertahun-tahun, tanpa pernah merasa terganggu sama sekali, tenang-tenang saja, tidak pernah ada rasa tidak nyaman atau teguran dari Tuhan yang dirasakan. Jadi kalau kita masih merasa "kena tegur" saat berbuat salah, entah lewat hati nurani, lewat firman yang seperti tertuju ke kita, atau lewat orang lain yang mengingatkan, itu justru tanda baik. Tanda kita dikasihi dan diurus oleh Tuhan. (Ibrani 12:6-8)

5. Buah (hasil) itu bersifat jangka panjang, bukan satu momen.
Seseorang yang sungguh2 beroleh keselamatan, makin hari ia makin punya kerinduan akan Tuhan, makin benci dosa, meski prosesnya naik-turun seperti siklus di Hakim-hakim itu sendiri. Jadi ini bukan soal hasil/buah yang sempurna dan instan, tapi melihat bagaimana proses dan arah pertumbuhannya. (Mat. 7:16-20)

Siklus dosa di Hakim-hakim justru menggambarkan gambaran orang percaya yang sesungguhnya, bukan orang yang tidak pernah jatuh, tapi orang yang terus-menerus dibawa pulang oleh anugerah Tuhan yang tidak menyerah pada mereka. Perbedaannya dengan yang tidak sungguh percaya bukan pada seberapa banyak jatuhnya, tapi pada apakah ada kepekaan akan suara Roh Kudus yang terus memanggil pulang, dan apakah orang itu terus merespons panggilan itu atau justru makin menjauh dan mengeraskan hati.

Kiranya jawaban ini dapat menjadi berkat dan menguatkan iman kita.

After listening to last Sunday's sermon on August 9, 2026, there was an explanation about the recurring cycle of sin and God's gracious response toward the people of Israel in the Book of Judges. Although they committed grievous sins, God did not destroy them as He did other nations because they were His chosen people.
My question is: when someone is caught in a cycle of sin, what is the difference between a Christian who has genuinely received salvation and one who has not, in the present day?

The difference between a Christian who has genuinely received salvation and one who has not, when both are caught in a cycle of sin, is not primarily about who never falls or how many times a person falls. Rather, it is about the pattern of their response when they fall. Some key differences are as follows:

1. An Internal Struggle Against Sin Rather Than Comfort in It
A person who has truly received salvation can still become entangled in sin, but there is an ongoing battle within them. Sin troubles them and creates an inner conflict; it is not something they simply normalize or become comfortable with. (Romans 7:14-25)

2. Sorrow That Leads to Genuine Repentance Rather Than Mere Guilt
In 2 Corinthians 7:10, Paul distinguishes between godly sorrow, which produces repentance leading to salvation, and worldly sorrow, which results only in temporary regret without a real change in the direction of one's life.

3. Sensitivity to the Holy Spirit's Conviction
A Christian who has genuinely received salvation possesses a sensitivity to the work of the Holy Spirit. Conviction of sin is the work of the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is actively working in the believer's heart rather than allowing it to become hardened. John 16:8 explains that the Holy Spirit convicts the world concerning sin. Even if believers fall repeatedly, they remain responsive to this conviction, unlike those whose hearts grow increasingly dull and hardened (cf. Hebrews 3:13).

4. Viewing God's Discipline as a Sign of Belonging Rather Than Rejection
When true believers fall into sin, they often experience a sense of discomfort: a troubled conscience, restlessness, anxiety, or correction through other people, sermons, or life circumstances that seem to speak directly to their situation.

These are signs that God is dealing with them because they are His children. What should raise concern is when someone continues living in sin for years without any sense of conviction, discomfort, or awareness of God's correction.

Therefore, if we still feel convicted when we do wrong, whether through our conscience, God's Word, or the admonition of others, that is actually a good sign. It is evidence that we are loved and lovingly disciplined by God. (Hebrews 12:6-8)

5. Fruit Is Seen Over the Long Term, Not in a Single Moment
A person who has genuinely received salvation gradually develops a greater desire for God and a deeper hatred of sin. The process may be uneven, with many ups and downs, much like the cycles seen in the Book of Judges.
The issue is not immediate perfection or instant fruitfulness, but rather the overall direction and pattern of growth in a person's life. (Matthew 7:16-20)
The cycle of sin in the Book of Judges actually provides a picture of the genuine believer: not someone who never falls, but someone whom God's grace continually brings back, because God never gives up on them. The difference between a true believer and one who is not genuinely converted is not how many times they fall, but whether there is an ongoing sensitivity to the voice of the Holy Spirit calling them back, and whether they continue responding to that call rather than drifting farther away and hardening their heart.
