Empat Pertanyaan Mengenai Roh Orang Mati

Saya memiliki beberapa pertanyaan seputar orang-orang yang sudah mati.

PERTANYAAN 1:

1. Apakah roh-roh orang mati bisa tinggal di dalam bumi? Alkitab mengajarkan bahwa ketika orang percaya mati, maka dia akan ditempatkan bersama-sama dengan Allah di Firdaus (Lukas 23:43). Akan tetapi, banyak cerita orang-orang bahwa mereka melihat penampakan orang yang sudah mati seperti berpamitan dengan mereka? Apabila demikian, siapakah roh-roh ini? Apakah mereka bisa keluar masuk Firdaus, atau keluar masuk neraka yang menyala-nyala?

JAWABAN 1:

Dalam pengajaran Alkitab bahwa orang yang mati rohnya tidak lagi tinggal di bumi.

Ada 4 tempat untuk roh orang yang mati, yaitu:

1. Firdaus (Yunani: Paradaisos. Inggris: Paradise) Dalam bahasa Yunani Helenistik, "paradeisos" (juga digunakan dalam Septuaginta, terjemahan PL dalam bahasa Yunani), yang merujuk pada pleasure-ground atau park atau king's garden atau Taman Eden.  Firdaus adalah tempat sementara bagi roh orang yang saleh, yang percaya pada pengharapan Mesias Yesus Kristus dan yang mati sebelum kematian dan kebangkitan Yesus maka rohnya akan dikumpulkan di Firdaus.

Contoh: Seorang penyamun yang disalibkan bersama Yesus meminta belas kasihan kepada-Nya. Yesus menjawab, “Hari ini juga engkau akan ada bersama-sama dengan Aku di dalam Firdaus ” (Luk 23:43 bdk 2 Kor 12:4; Why 2:7)

2. Dunia orang mati (Yunani: hades. adalah tempat tinggal roh orang mati yang suram dan berkabut (disebut juga Erebos) atau tempat dewa kematian dan raja dunia bawah.

Di Perjanjian Lama, kata yang digunakan untuk merujuk pada dunia orang mati adalah sheol, yang berarti “tempat orang mati ” atau “tempat berpulangnya jiwa/roh.”

Perjanjian Baru mengindikasikan kalau hades/sheol ini adalah tempat sementara di mana semua roh orang-yang-tidak-percaya pada Kristus yang mati sebelum kematian dan kebangkitan Yesus dikurung untuk kelak dibangkitkan dan diadili saat kedatangan Kristus kedua kali. (lihat: Mazmur 89:48; Ayub 7:9; 21:13; Pengkh 9:10)

3. (Yunani: οὐρανός – OURANOS) Tempat kekal bagi roh orang yang mati yang percaya Yesus Kristus setelah kematian dan kebangkitan Yesus. Roh ini tidak lagi ke firdaus tetapi langsung dikumpulkan di sorga.

2Kor 5:1 - “Karena kami tahu, bahwa jika kemah tempat kediaman kita di bumi ini dibongkar, Allah telah menyediakan suatu tempat kediaman di sorga bagi kita, suatu tempat kediaman yang kekal, yang tidak dibuat oleh tangan manusia”.

1 Tes 4:13-14, “Karena jikalau kita percaya, bahwa Yesus telah mati dan telah bangkit, maka kita percaya juga bahwa mereka yang telah meninggal dalam Yesus akan dikumpulkan Allah bersama-sama dengan Dia.”

Beberapa istilah untuk sorga, Rumah Bapa (Yoh 14:2); Yerusalem batu (Gal 4:26; Ibrani 12:22; Why 3:12); Kerajaan Sorga (Matius 16:19; Yakobus 2:5)

4. Neraka (Yunani: gehena)

Lautan api, istilah yang hanya digunakan di kitab Wahyu 19:20 dan 20:10, 14-15, yang merujuk pada api neraka yang kekal. Tempat kekal bagi roh orang yang mati yang tidak percaya Kristus, tempat penghukuman kekal bagi semua pemberontak yang tidak mau bertobat, baik para malaikat dan manusia (Mat 25:41). Tempat ini digambarkan sebagai tempat yang di mana api menyala-nyala, dan mereka yang ada di dalamnya akan mengalami siksaan yang kekal, yang kesakitannya tidak bisa digambarkan dengan kata-kata (Luk 16:24; Mar 9:45-46). Mereka yang menolak Kristus akan dikurung di gehena untuk nantinya dibuang ke lautan api sebagai tujuan terakhir mereka menghabiskan kekekalan.

2Kor 5:10 - “Sebab kita semua harus menghadap takhta pengadilan Kristus, supaya setiap orang memperoleh apa yang patut diterimanya, sesuai dengan yang dilakukannya dalam hidupnya ini, baik ataupun jahat”.

Wah 20:12 - “Dan aku melihat orang2 mati, besar dan kecil, berdiri di depan takhta itu. Lalu dibuka semua kitab. Dan dibuka juga sebuah kitab lain, yaitu kitab kehidupan. Dan orang2 mati dihakimi menurut perbuatan mereka, berdasarkan apa yang ada tertulis di dalam kitab2 itu”.

PERTANYAAN 2:

2. Apakah roh-roh orang mati bisa dipanggil? Seperti yang dikisahkan dalam 1 Samuel 28 : 13-20. Dalam konteks bacaan ini, Saul meminta seorang perempuan untuk memanggil roh Samuel, dan ketika Samuel digambarkan seperti orang ilahi yang sudah tua dan berjubah. Apakah benar Saul berkomunikasi dengan roh Samuel? dan jawaban roh Samuel pun seperti jawaban seorang nabi (dan memang dia adalah nabi di kehidupannya). 13 Maka berbicaralah raja kepadanya: ”Janganlah takut; tetapi apakah yang kaulihat?” Perempuan itu menjawab Saul: ”Aku melihat sesuatu yang ilahi muncul dari dalam bumi.” 14 Kemudian bertanyalah ia kepada perempuan itu: ”Bagaimana rupanya?” Jawabnya: ”Ada seorang tua muncul, berselubungkan jubah.” Maka tahulah Saul, bahwa itulah Samuel, lalu berlututlah ia dengan mukanya sampai ke tanah dan sujud menyembah.” 15 Sesudah itu berbicaralah Samuel kepada Saul: ”Mengapa engkau mengganggu aku dengan memanggil aku muncul?” Kata Saul: ”Aku sangat dalam keadaan terjepit: orang Filistin berperang melawan aku, dan Allah telah undur dari padaku. Ia tidak menjawab aku lagi, baik dengan perantaraan nabi maupun dengan mimpi. Sebab itu aku memanggil engkau, supaya engkau memberitahukan kepadaku, apa yang harus kuperbuat.” 16 Lalu berbicaralah Samuel: ”Mengapa engkau bertanya kepadaku, padahal Tuhan telah undur dari padamu dan telah menjadi musuhmu? Tuhan telah melakukan kepadamu seperti yang difirmankan-Nya dengan perantaraanku, yakni Tuhan telah mengoyakkan kerajaan dari tanganmu dan telah memberikannya kepada orang lain, kepada Daud.”

JAWABAN 2:

Prinsip dasar bahwa iblis:

• Bisa menyamar sebagai malaikat terang (2 Kor 11:14)
• adalah bapak pendusta (Yoh 8:44)
• memakai firman Tuhan tetapi memanipulasi (Matius 4:1-11)
• menyamar sebagai domba (Matius 7:15)

Roh orang yang mati sebelum Kristus bangkit: yang percaya pengharapan Mesias dikumpulkan di firdaus (paradaisos), setelah kebangkitan Yesus dikumpulkan langsung ke sorga (ouranos); bagi yang tidak percaya, sebelum kebangkitan Yesus dikumpulkan di dunia orang mati (hades). Setelah kebangkitan Yesus dikumpulkan di neraka (gehenna).

Dua dunia sorga dan neraka tidak bisa saling berhubungan dan roh yang mati tidak bisa keluar lagi dari sorga atau neraka lalu pergi ke bumi dll. roh orang mati tidak bisa dipanggil.

Perhatikan prinsip kebenaran ini di Lukas 16:19-31. Orang kaya yang menderita di alam maut minta setetes air kepada Lazarus, tetapi tidak bisa. Begitu juga ketika orang kaya itu minta Lazarus beritahu keluarganya di bumi, juga tidak bisa. Dilukiskan ada jurang yang besa yang tak tersebrangi. Jelas, orang orang mati tidak bisa berhubungan dengan dunia orang hidup di bumi.

Jika demikian maka roh Samuel yang dipanggil oleh Saul adalah roh palsu bukan roh Samuel, tetapi roh iblis yang menyamar seperti roh Samuel. Buktinya:

• 1 Samuel 28:13 Maka berbicaralah raja kepadanya: ”Janganlah takut; tetapi apakah yang kaulihat?” Perempuan itu menjawab Saul: ”Aku melihat sesuatu yang ilahi muncul dari dalam bumi.” Apakah sesuatu yang Ilahi muncul dari (bawah)bumi? Yang ilahi muncul dari atas bukan dari bawah. Ingat bahwa bumi (bawah) adalah dunia bawah, iblis adalah raja dunia bawah. Hades; dunia bawah.
• Iblis tidak akan saling menghancurkan tetapi bekerja sama untuk menjerat dan menghancurkan manusia. (Lihat: Lukas 11:18) Iblis menyamar sebagai malaikat terang untuk menjebak manusia.

Demikian juga praktik memanggil arwah bukankah arwah orang yg mati tetapi iblis yang menyamar sebagai roh yang dipanggil. Dengan demikian manusia semakin terjerat dan percaya kepada dunia iblis dan pemanggilan arwah.

PERTANYAAN 3:

3. Apakah roh-roh orang mati bisa berdoa bagi mereka yang masih ada di bumi? Agama Katolik mengizinkan kita meminta bantuan orang-orang mati untuk membantu mendoakan kita yang ada di bumi ini. Sebagai contoh yang paling konkret adalah meminta pertolongan Maria untuk berdoa bagi orang-orang yang masih hidup.

JAWABAN 3:

Dalam iman Presbyterian bahwa

1. Berdoa kepada orang yang sudah meninggal tegas adalah dilarang oleh Alkitab. Ulangan 18:11 mengatakan bahwa siapa pun yang "meminta petunjuk kepada orang-orang mati" adalah "kekejian bagi Tuhan." Kisah Saul yang meminta petunjuk kepada perempuan pemanggil arwah untuk memunculkan roh Samuel berujung pada kematiannya, "karena perbuatannya yang tidak setia terhadap TUHAN, oleh karena ia tidak berpegang pada firman TUHAN, dan juga karena ia telah meminta petunjuk dari arwah" (1 Sam 28:1-25; 1 Taw 10:13-14).
2. Setelah seseorang meninggal, roh orang itu menantikan penghakiman TUHAN (Ibrani 9:27: "... Dan sama seperti manusia ditetapkan untuk mati hanya satu kali saja, dan sesudah itu dihakimi." Jika seseorang meninggal di dalam Kristus, maka ia akan pergi ke surga untuk menetap bersama Allah (2 Kor 5:1-9, khususnya ayat 8). Jika seseorang meninggal dalam dosanya, maka ia akan pergi ke neraka. Pada akhirnya, semua orang di neraka akan dilemparkan ke dalam lautan api (Why 20:14-15). Maka bagaimana mungkin kita meminta berkat kepada mereka yang masih akan dihakimi oleh Allah kelak.
3. Tuhan kita hanya satu yang Yesus Kristus bukan tokoh2 nabi, rasul, dll. jangan ada padamu Allah lain atau jangan menjadikan siapapun Allah bagi kita (hukum ke 1 dan 2 dari 10 hukum TUHAN)
4. Sebaliknya dalam Kitab Suci, kita tidak memiliki perintah atau dorongan untuk berdoa bagi orang mati (lihat Ibrani 9:27). Mereka yang meninggal dalam Kristus tidak membutuhkan doa kita . Mereka yang meninggal tanpa Kristus tidak dapat ditolong oleh doa kita.

PERTANYAAN 4:

4. Apakah roh-roh orang mati bisa melihat apa yang terjadi di bumi? Sebab Allah yang bertahta di dalam Surga bisa melihat bumi. Bagaimana dengan orang-orang mati yang tinggal bersama dengan Dia di Firdaus?

JAWABAN 4:
berdasarkan Lukas 16:19-31, roh-roh orang mati bisa melihat ke bumi tetapi tidak bisa berhubungan atau tidak bisa berbuat apa2 atau tidak bisa mempengaruhi apalagi melindungi kehidupan di bumi.

Pelajaran dari Lukas 16:19-31 adalah jagalah hidup dan perbuatan kita sebaik2nya sebab jika kita sudah meninggal maka semua tidak bisa diperbaiki dan orang matipun tidak bisa bantu kita yang masih hidup di bumi ini. Jika semua roh bisa membantu kita maka sia-sialah hidup saleh kita di bumi ini.

TUHAN Yesus memberkati kita semua. Terima kasih atas pertanyaan yang membangun iman ini.

QUESTION 1:

Can the spirits of the dead reside on earth? The Bible teaches that when believers die, they will be placed with God in Paradise (Luke 23:43). However, there are many stories of people claiming to see apparitions of the dead, as if they are saying goodbye. If so, who are these spirits? Can they go in and out of Paradise, or in and out of the blazing hellfire?

ANSWER 1:

According to biblical teaching, once a person dies, their spirit does not remain on earth.

There are four “places” for the spirit of the dead:

1. Paradise (Greek: Paradaisos; English: Paradise) In Hellenistic Greek, “paradeisos” (also used in the Septuagint—the Greek translation of the Old Testament) refers to a pleasure-ground, park, king’s garden, or the Garden of Eden. Paradise is the temporary place for the spirit of the righteous—those who believed in the hope of the Messiah, Jesus Christ. For those who died before Jesus’ death and resurrection, their spirits are gathered in Paradise. Example: A robber crucified alongside Jesus asked for mercy, and Jesus replied, “Today you will be with Me in Paradise” (Luke 23:43; see also 2 Corinthians 12:4; Revelation 2:7).
2. The World of the Dead (Greek: hades) This is the dwelling place of the dead—a gloomy and misty realm (also referred to as Erebos) or the domain of the god of death and the ruler of the underworld. In the Old Testament, the word used to refer to the world of the dead is “sheol,” meaning “the place of the dead” or “the place where souls go to rest.” The New Testament indicates that hades/sheol is a temporary place where the spirits of those who did not believe in Christ—and who died before Jesus’ death and resurrection—are confined until they are raised and judged at Christ’s second coming (see Psalm 89:48; Job 7:9; 21:13; Ecclesiastes 9:10).
3. Heaven (Greek: οὐρανός – ouranos) This is the eternal dwelling place for the spirit of the person who, after Jesus’ death and resurrection, believes in Jesus Christ. Instead of going to Paradise, the spirit is immediately gathered into heaven. For example: 2 Corinthians 5:1 – “For we know that if our earthly dwelling is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands.” 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14 – “For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus.”

   Other terms used for heaven include “the Father's House” (John 14:2); “the solid city of Jerusalem” (Galatians 4:26; Hebrews 12:22; Revelation 3:12); and “the Kingdom of Heaven” (Matthew 16:19; James 2:5).

4. Hell (Greek: gehena) Often described as a “lake of fire”—a term used only in Revelation 19:20 and 20:10, 14-15—this refers to the eternal fire of hell. It is the eternal place for the spirit of those who did not believe in Christ, the place of eternal punishment for all rebels who refuse to repent, whether angels or humans (cf. Matthew 25:41). This place is depicted as one where fire burns endlessly, and those within it will experience eternal torment beyond what words can describe (Luke 16:24; Mark 9:45-46). Those who reject Christ are confined in gehena, eventually cast into the lake of fire—this being the final destination for their eternal existence.

   For instance, 2 Corinthians 5:10 – “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.” Revelation 20:12 – “And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books.”

QUESTION 2:

Can the spirits of the dead be summoned? For example, as recounted in 1 Samuel 28:13-20. In this passage, Saul asks a woman to summon the spirit of Samuel, and Samuel is depicted as a divine figure—an old man cloaked in a robe. Is it true that Saul was communicating with the spirit of Samuel? Notice that Samuel’s response comes like that of a prophet (and indeed he was a prophet in his lifetime).

[Scriptural passage:] 13 Then the king said to her, “Do not be afraid. What do you see?” The woman answered, “I see a spirit coming up out of the earth.” 14 Then he asked her, “What is his appearance?” And she said, “A very old man, wearing a robe.” Then Saul knew it was Samuel, and he bowed down and prostrated himself. 15 Then Samuel said to Saul, “Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?” Saul replied, “I am in great distress. The Philistines are waging war against me, and God has turned away from me. Neither through the consultation of a prophet nor through dreams has He answered me. Therefore, I have called upon you to tell me what I should do.” 16 Then Samuel said, “Why do you ask me, since the LORD has turned away from you and has become your enemy? For the LORD has done as He foretold by me: He has torn the kingdom from you and given it to one of your neighbors, namely David.”

ANSWER 2:

The basic principle regarding the devil is as follows:

• He can masquerade as an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14).
• He is the father of lies (John 8:44).
• He may use God’s Word yet manipulate it (cf. Matthew 4:1-11).
• He can disguise himself as a lamb (cf. Matthew 7:15).

Furthermore, regarding the spirits of those who died before Christ rose: For those who believed in the hope of the Messiah, their spirits were gathered in Paradise (paradeisos); after Jesus’ resurrection, they are gathered directly into heaven (ouranos). For those who did not believe, before the resurrection they were confined in the realm of the dead (hades); after Jesus’ resurrection, they are gathered in hell (gehenna).

Because the two realms—heaven and hell—do not interact, a dead spirit cannot leave heaven or hell to come to earth, etc. Thus, the spirits of the dead cannot be summoned.

Consider the clear truth presented in Luke 16:19-31. The rich man in torment in the afterlife begged for a drop of water from Lazarus but could not receive it. Likewise, when he asked Lazarus to warn his family on earth, he could not do so. A great chasm is depicted that cannot be crossed. Clearly, the dead cannot interact with the living on earth.

Therefore, the “spirit of Samuel” that Saul summoned was not actually Samuel’s spirit but a false spirit—indeed, a demonic spirit masquerading as Samuel. The evidence is as follows:

In 1 Samuel 28:13, the king asks, “Do not be afraid, but what do you see?” The woman replied, “I see something divine rising up from the earth.” What is divine should come from above and not from below. Remember, the earth (the lower realm) is the underworld, and the devil is the ruler of that lower world—hades; the world below. The devil does not seek to destroy his own work but to cooperate in ensnaring and destroying humanity (see Luke 11:18). He disguises himself as an angel of light to lead people astray.

Likewise, the practice of summoning a spirit is not truly calling forth the spirit of a dead person but rather a demonic spirit impersonating the dead. In this way, people become further ensnared, believing in the realm of demons and the practice of summoning spirits.

QUESTION 3:

Can the spirits of the dead pray for those still living on earth? The Catholic Church permits us to ask for the help of the dead in praying for us here on earth. A very concrete example is asking for the intercession of Mary to pray for the living.

ANSWER 3:

In Presbyterian faith it is clear that praying to someone who is already dead is strictly forbidden by the Bible. Deuteronomy 18:11 states that anyone who “seeks guidance from the dead” is an “abomination to the LORD.” The account of Saul, who sought guidance from a woman who summoned a spirit to bring up Samuel, ended in his downfall “because of his unfaithfulness to the LORD—since he did not adhere to the word of the LORD, and because he sought guidance from the spirit” (1 Samuel 28:1-25; 1 Chronicles 10:13-14).

After a person dies, his or her spirit awaits the judgment of the LORD (Hebrews 9:27: “…and just as man is destined to die once, and after that comes judgment…”). If one dies in Christ, he/she will go to heaven to dwell with God (2 Corinthians 5:1-9, especially verse 8). If one dies in sin, he/she goes to hell. Ultimately, everyone in hell will be thrown into the lake of fire (Revelation 20:14-15). How then can we ask for blessings from those who are still awaiting judgment by God?

Our Lord is one—Jesus Christ—not figures such as prophets, apostles, etc. Do not have other gods or make anyone else a god for you (the first and second commandments of the Ten Commandments).

Furthermore, Scripture does not command or even encourage us to pray for the dead (see Hebrews 9:27). Those who die in Christ do not need our prayers; those who die without Christ cannot be helped by our prayers.

QUESTION 4:

4. Can the spirits of the dead see what is happening on earth? Since the God who sits on His throne in Heaven can see the earth, what about the dead who dwell with Him in Paradise?

ANSWER 4: Based on Luke 16:19-31, the spirits of the dead can see the earth but they cannot communicate, act, influence, or even protect the life on earth. The lesson from Luke 16:19-31 is that we should guard our lives and actions because once we die, nothing can be changed, and even the dead cannot assist us who are still living on earth. If all spirits could help us, then our righteous living on earth would be in vain.
